You gotta move it, move it! The importance of Physical Activity

Regular – moderate to vigorous – Physical Activity is IMPORTANT!

Regular physical activity includes participation in moderate and vigorous physical activities and muscle-strengthening activities – AND – more than 80 percent of adults do not meet the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities that are needed to maintain optimal fitness. What’s even scarier, that even the majority of adolescents and children do not meet the recommended levels for their age group!

Among adults regular physical activity lowers the risk of early death, coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancer, falls and depression.

Among children and adolescents, physical activity can improve bone health, improve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, decrease levels of body fat, and reduce symptoms of depression.  AND it can improve brain function thereby increasing performance at school!

So, physical activity is important not only for you but also for your children. Why not build in regular moderate to vigorous activity times as family events?
